Solar Challenge
Solar Panel Project - GreenFerry 2011 Solar Challenge
GreenFerry has an exciting new project for residents of South Queensferry in 2011. GreenFerry want residents to enjoy the prospect of harnessing the power of the sun as a clean, renewable energy resource. With rocketing energy costs, means that now has never been a better time to consider using solar energy in our homes.
This environmentally friendly system, could be the perfect way to take control of our energy bills. GreenFerry are inviting Queensferry residents to take advantage of our 2011 Energy audit and Solar thermal heating offer. With large energy and money savings to be had, GreenFerry hope to sign up to 50 Queensferry homes to benefit from this exciting new technology. In a similar project nearby, Linlithgow has been successful in signing up over 160 homes for this Solar Thermal heating system.
Why Go Solar
Solar thermal (hot water) systems can be extremely efficient, reducing costs and energy consumption. For a solar system to work, all they need is daylight as they can collect both direct radiation, direct sunlight on clear days, and diffused radiation, light which is present on cloudy days.
In terms of costs you would expect to save between 50% -70% on your annual heating costs, as the more hot water used the greater the saving. For a family of four, a well designed solar water heating system should contribute around 1,500 kWh to 2,000 kWh, which will be equivalent to 50% to 65% of the households water heating energy needs.
How It Works

How much will it costs ?
We are delighted to be part of this project, and we have approved a registered MCS company, Future Proof Energy, to carry out this work, which includes an initial survey of your property. If we can get around 50 households to sign up, we can each enjoy a discount of around £1500. This puts the cost of equipment and installation in the region £3000. And even then, interest-free loans of £2,000 may still be available in Scotland to help you spread the load.
But the Government has stepped in to help too. Their Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (RHI)became effective from April 2011, and is the first of its kind in the world. Thats really something. Over the next 10 years, the plan is to hugely increase the use of renewable technologies, and they will even reward you for making the change-over. Much depends on the size of your house, of course, but there is a repayment scheme with a quarterly pay-back guaranteed for the next 20 years, which will help you easily recover the cost of your solar thermal water heating.
We are hosting a solar challege evening to invite residents to relaxed evening at Orocco Pier on the 26th October 2011 from 7 - 9pm to discuss our community Project.
